Friday Night Video

First time in a long time I've been late with this segment...and I don't even have a valid excuse. I was home doing a lot of nothing. Well, technically, I was watching Bruno on DVD, but that film does provide the inspiration for today's video selection.

If you've seen Bruno, you might recall a hilariously disturbing segment in which parents are interviewed about their infant's abilities to withstand certain "peculiarities" of a music video Bruno wants to film. The parents are SO determined to have their babies become stars that they pretty much answer "yes" to every question posed, no matter how absurd the questions become. Questions like, "may we string your baby up on a crucifix?" and "how does your baby handle dead or dying animals?" and "is your baby okay with burning phosphorous" and "can you get your 30-pound baby to lose 10 pounds in a week?" It's the best part of the movie by far.

Anyway, if you think that that scenario is far-fetched, then perhaps you need to see the official music video for MGMT's Kids. While the song was a huge hit in 2008 (really, it's hard not to like it), the official video from Sony Music wasn't released until this summer...meaning many people, even fans, might've missed the video. If Bruno had been interviewing parents for THIS video, he might've asked questions like, "is your baby okay being fondled by monsters?" or "would it be okay if we permanently fucked up your baby and gave it eternal nightmares?" MGMT claims no children were harmed during the making of the video, but I'm not buying it. This baby is fucked. I mean, it's an interesting video and all...and the song is always fun to listen to, but somebody should check back in on this kid in 15 years. Seriously. And if the monsters didn't screw him up, having to watch MGMT in their aluminum get-ups most certainly did.
